Open BookDevelopment & Research

NIACE carries out development, research and consultancy activities in all areas of adult learning.

These activities can depend on policy priorities and funding opportunities. Development and research staff work on commissioned projects, with help from colleagues in academia, industry and commerce and the public sector. This work is often published, details of which can be found in the NIACE bookshop.

Learning Surveys

NIACE surveys to measure adult participation in learning provide information on the proportion of adults participating in learning, a breakdown of participants and non-participants and a comparison of results within the series.

Every year the survey asks respondents about their participation in learning and whether they intend to take up learning in the future. Every third year, the survey also asks additional questions about the learning that has taken place. In some years, additional questions are asked about a particular subject of interest.
